I store almost all of my frequently-used tools in this toolchest. It’s in the style of the Dutch toolchest that Chris Schwarz has written about quite a lot. I made mine a bit wider than his standard size in order to fit my full-size handsaws. This was actually one of my first ever projects. I built it in winter 2016/2017, before I had even built my work bench. It was my first time doing casework, cutting dovetails and making a raised panel. I also used way too many nails! It’s made from some nice clear pine, and finished in a couple coats of green milk paint.
The most-used tools live in the upper portion. That’s all the bench planes, saws, chisels, and some layout tools. The dividers are 1/4″ plywood connected with simple lap joints.
The lower portion is kind of the “junk drawer.” Down here lives all the stuff I use a lot but don’t fit nicely into rectangles. Sharpening tools, screwdrivers, more layout tools, router and moulding planes, and so on.
Here’s where I split out some end grain with one of the nails!
